Decisions

Decisions of the Committee are limited to assessing the ethical, institutional, and regulatory appropriateness of the use of human anatomic materials and making a recommendation as to approval, disapproval, tabling, or request for revision or more information. The recommendations of the Committee are forwarded by the Chair to the appropriate Institutional Official for the final decision.

Members

The voting members of the Committee include the Chair, Vice Chair, faculty representatives from the SOM, GSN, and PDC (formerly NPDS). The number of members is at the discretion of the Convening Authority. The presence of at least five voting members constitutes a quorum. An effort is made to appoint members with differing backgrounds and to stagger the appointments by year so that changes in membership are not simultaneous.

The usual term of appointment is two to three years, with options for re-appointment at the discretion of the Chair and the Convening Authority.

Non-voting ex-officio members are recommended by the Chair and appointed by the convening Authority as deemed necessary for specific advisory roles and for variable terms as deemed appropriate.

The Chair may appoint members to serve on specific subcommittees (e.g., Educational Subcommittee, or Research Subcommittee). Such members may be tasked to pre-review protocols and to present their views to the rest of the Committee.

Meetings

Meetings are held at the discretion of the Chair, but should be no less frequently than quarterly.
