Sean Moran received his B.A. in Chemistry from Wesleyan University in 1981 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from University of Colorado in 1988.  His post-doctoral research at the University of Rochester dealt with substrate binding and kinetics of RNA enzymes (ribozymes) and the use of hydrophobic isosteres (shape mimics) of nucleotide bases by DNA polymerase enzymes.  He then taught briefly at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.  From there Sean took a research position at Rice University in Houston, TX studying the structure of RNA and RNA-protein complexes.  He subsequently became the NMR Facility Manager in charge of 3 high field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers; his research collaborations included structural biology of proteins and nucleic acids, structural elucidation of small biologically active compounds, and metabolomics.  Dr. Moran is now the Director of the Structural Biology/Proteomics Core Facility of the Biomedical Instrumentation Center at USUHS, where he advises USUHS scientists in the design and implementation of mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and NMR experiments to further their research goals.
