Healthcare Coalitions as a Potential Vehicle for Disaster Health Education and Training
Healthcare coalitions (HCCs) bring together a wide variety of healthcare agencies for the purpose of increasing preparedness capacity in community-wide healthcare systems. Members of HCCs participate in healthcare system emergency preparedness activities and serve to assist Emergency Management and Emergency Support Function (ESF) #8 (the health and medical workforce mobilized in a federally declared disaster) with preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation activities in the event of a disaster. They also provide multi-agency coordination of resources for healthcare organizations and interface with the appropriate level of emergency operations to provide situational awareness in a response.
In the summer of 2013, NCDMPH conducted interviews with nine well-established healthcare coalitions across the country to identify opportunities for improved education and training of disaster health concepts within the coalition structure. This formative research explores healthcare coalition interests, activities, and education and training needs. The NCDMPH is using research results in a translational way to assist healthcare coalitions in improving their preparedness capabilities.
The first two research-informed translational products are posted. They seek to meet the most commonly identified learning needs of the study respondents. These products are now available for free online.
