Dr. Copeland graduated from Brown University and earned her MD degree from UConn on an Army HPSP scholarship, graduating in 1985. She completed her general surgery residency training at Walter Reed in 1991. Active duty tours included Seoul, Korea; Fort Belvoir, VA; San Antonio, TX; Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and finally Walter Reed. She retired from the Army in 2005 at the rank of Colonel.
Since that time Dr. Copeland has been a member of the USUHS faculty, serving first as the Clinical Coordinator at Walter Reed and, since 2012, as the Core Clerkship Director. She is an active clinician with a special interest in breast surgery and in educational research. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine. She is a Fellow and a current Governor of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Women in Surgery Committee of the ACS. She is also a longtime member and past president of the Association of Women Surgeons..
