Commander Hernán Altamar received his commission from the US Naval Academy in 1993 and attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He received his medical degree in 1997. He completed an internship in Surgery and residency in Urology at Naval Medical Center San Diego. From 2006-2008, he was the department head of the Urology Service at US Naval Hospital Guam. From 2008 to 2010, he pursued training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, completing a fellowship in Endourology/Laparoscopy/Robotic Surgery. He arrived to USUHS and NNMC Bethesda in 2010, and is currently one of two minimally invasive urologic surgery specialists at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). CDR Altamar is board certified in Urology by the American Board of Urology and Endourology by the Endourological Society. He has published in the fields of Endourology and laparoscopic and robotic urological surgery. He is currently the Navy Specialty Leader for Urology to Chief, BUMED.
