Application Process and Financial Support

You may apply by clicking the following link -  https://registrar.usuhs.edu.

Applications are accepted throughout the year. However, for full consideration and evaluation for stipend support, completed applications should be received by December 1 for matriculation in August. There is no application fee.

USU provides an attractive package of financial support to students, which will be administered as a part-time Federal salary for your position as a Research Associate. The financial support of this package will be approximately $34,800 per year. As an Administratively Determined (AD) Federal employee, your salary is subject to standard taxes and withholdings. Your net income will be ~$23,000 annually, following all standard and elected withholdings and deductions (e.g., Federal/state taxes and health insurance).

As an AD employee, you will receive standard Federal benefits including contributions towards health insurance, retirement, and transit costs. Additionally, you have the option to decline certain benefits, which will increase your net income. Students are supported as Federal employees for the first 3 three years of their enrollment. After this period, students transition to employment as Research Associates by the Henry M. Jackson (HMJ) Foundation. These positions are supported by grants awarded to mentors or by fellowships awarded to students.

There are no tuition charges for graduate students at USU, nor is there any requirement in the form of government or military service. Most required textbooks are provided without charge.

USUHS subscribes fully to the policy of equal educational opportunity and accepts students on a competitive basis without regard to race, color, sex, or creed.

To qualify for admission, prospective students must possess a Grade Point Average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 grade scale. In addition to the application, prospective students must also provide the following:

  • Complete academic transcripts of postsecondary study
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the academic achievements of the applicant
  • A personal statement that expresses the applicant's career objectives.
  • GRE scores (the General Test is mandatory and a Subject Test in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, or Chemistry is recommended but optional)

After submitting an complete application and review from the committee, students will be required to undergo several interviews with MCB faculty. Interviews occur, with invitation, during the University's annual Open House in late February.

What's the Catch?  There is no catch! Students are in NO way obligated to perform military service.

Doctoral recipients from USU have taken top research positions in academia and biotechnology companies throughout the country.
