American College of Physician, US Army Chapter, Elects New Governor

Army ACP GovernorCongratulations to the US Army Chapter Governor-Elect Designee, LTC Cristin A. Mount, MD, FACP. Our new Governor-elect Designee (GED) will do a year of training as a Governor-elect and then will start her four-year term as Governor in the Spring of 2017. As Governor, Dr. Mount will serve as the official representative of the College for the US Army Chapter, providing a link between members at the local level and leadership at the national level. In the meantime, Dr. Mount will be working closely with COL Kent DeZee (the current Governor) and College staff to learn about the College and her duties as Governor. Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teacher Award

Dr. LazarusAngeline Lazarus, MD, MACP, USU Professor of Medicine was recognized during the American College of Physicians, Internal Medicine Week, 2017, 30 March – 2 April 2017, San Diego, CA, as the 2016, Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teacher Award. This award is bestowed upon a Fellow or Master of the College who has demonstrated the ennobling qualities of a great teacher as judged by the acclaim and accomplishments of former students who have been inspired and have achieved positions of leadership in the field of medical education, primarily as teachers. This annual recognition is the only national-level "full-spectrum" award given by the American College of Physicians, which is one of the largest medical specialty society organizations in the world. The award can best be summed up as highlighting accomplishment not only in medical education in our specialty and subspecialties across undergraduate and graduate medical education, but also lifetime as an empowering "Teacher of Teachers." Dr. Lazarus is a former Governor and founding member of the ACP Navy Chapter, who has already achieved Mastership in the College. She is a former Program Director of the NCC Internal Medicine (Bethesda) Residency Program and former Chief of Medicine and Director of Medical Services at National Naval Military Medical Center (now Walter Reed) Bethesda. Dr. Lazarus is a Professor of Medicine in the Uniformed Services University and currently sees her patients and teaches residents, fellows and students in the Walter Reed Bethesda Pulmonary Medicine Service.

Associate Director, Research, Graduate Programs in Health Professions Education, Dept. of Medicine, for her original research on the impact of changing technology (EHR use) on both the understanding of education as well as clinical care as published in the April 28, 2015 issue of Medical Education.

Background

“As electronic health records (EHRs) are adopted by teaching hospitals, educators must examine how this change impacts trainee development. This influence is investigated by studying clinician experiences of a hospital's move from paper charts to an EHR. Questions asked: how does each chart modality present conceptions of time and data  interconnections? How do these conceptions affect clinical reasoning?”

“The current Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak has resulted in more than 24,000 cases and 10,000 deaths. We present a preliminary report from two phase 1 trials of an attenuated, replication-competent, recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV)–based vaccine candidate to prevent EVD”.

ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award

2016-17 Awardee: CAPT William Shimeall

Bill ShimeallThe USUHS  Dept. of Medicine  is proud to announce that CAPT William Shimeall has been selected by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to receive the prestigious Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award.

The Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award honors program directors who find innovative ways to teach residents and to provide quality health care while remaining connected to the initial impulse to care for others in this environment. Parker J. Palmer's book The Courage to Teach promotes the concept of "living divided no more," which has proven relevant to teaching in academic health centers.  Only 10 Program Directors are selected each year for this prestigious award from approximately 500 nominations. 

CAPT Shimeall is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, and assigned to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD.

 



LTC Joshua D. Hartzell to receive the Army “A” Proficiency Designator

Joshua HartzellThe Dept. of Medicine is pleased to announce that LTC Joshua Hartzell will receive the Army’s “A” Proficiency Designator  Award at a ceremony in November.  Dr. Hartzell,   an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Medicine’s Infectious Diseases Division is also the Director of the Internal Medicine Selectives at Fort Belvoir.

The purpose of the "A" Proficiency Designator is to recognize the highest level of professional achievement within each AMEDD Corps' specialty. Officers selected for this honor are leaders in their specialty and have made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in their particular field through extensive publication and active national professional organization membership. These professionals have worked hard and dedicated a significant amount of time to become a distinct asset to the AMEDD, both as an officer and an expert in their field. They are considered eminently qualified to chair a department, division, or service; have attained full professional status; and have obtained national prominence in their field.
