Biography

Lieutenant Commander Lauren Suszan is Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and an Assistant Professor with the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. LCDR Suszan serves as the Assistant Site Director of Clinical Training in the Registered Nurse Anesthesia Program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia. LCDR Suszan also serves as a reviewer for the International Student Journal of Nurse Anesthetists and is involved as a guest lecturer and clinical site coordinator for several civilian nurse anesthesia programs.

LCDR Suszan began her nursing career as a pediatric trauma nurse in Dayton, Ohio before deciding to commission in the United States Navy Nurse Corps in May 2007. LCDR Suszan started her Navy Nursing career at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, California. She gained invaluable naval and nursing knowledge at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton where she worked as a postpartum nurse, emergency medicine nurse, and clinic manager for primary and specialty care clinics. She also deployed with the United States Marine Corps, 1st Medical Battalion, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Al Taqqadum, Iraq as a trauma and enroute care nurse. LCDR Suszan applied to and was selected for Duty Under Instruction to attend USU as a student in the registered nurse anesthetist program. She completed Phase II of her anesthesia training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. After graduating, LCDR Suszan continued as a staff CRNA at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. LCDR Suszan’s next assignment was Naval Medical Center San Diego, California where she served on the procedural sedation committee and as the division officer for obstetrical anesthesia. While stationed in San Diego, LCDR Suszan completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice which led to her selection as the Assistant Site Director of Clinical Training at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia.
