NCDMPH continues to develop and propagate disaster health core competencies through an ongoing disaster health curriculum recommendations project based on the article,"Core Competencies for Disaster Medicine and Public Health." PDF  in Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, the co-authored article by AMA Center for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response and five NCDMPH staff members. Released in March of 2012, this article identified 11 core competencies for all potential Emergency Support Function #8 (ESF-8) health system responders.

The project aligns with another key area of interest for NCDMPH, pediatric disaster health. "Curriculum Recommendations for Disaster Health Professionals: The Pediatric Population" is NCDMPH's first disaster health curriculum recommendation and developed in collaboration with two subject matter experts from USU's Graduate School of Nursing, Lt Col Heather Johnson, USAF, NC, DNP, FNP-BC, FAANP and Dr. Catherine G. Ling, FNP-BC.

This peer reviewed set of curriculum recommendations is designed to aid disaster educators that focus on children. These recommendations and resources are aligned with both the 11 core competencies and the disaster cycle (mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery) to allow educators and trainers to tailor curricula to their specific needs.
