
Trauma is the leading cause of death for people 1-40 years old. More specifically, according to the National Trauma Institute, hemorrhaging is responsible for almost 35% of pre-hospital deaths and 40% of deaths in the first twenty-four hours after a traumatic event. Given these facts, on October 6, 2015 the White House launched the Stop the Bleed initiative. Stop the Bleed seeks to build personal resilience and safeguard the nation by empowering the public to stop life-threatening hemorrhage. Stop the Bleed recognizes that while the public is relatively well educated about layperson lifesaving for cardiac arrest and choking, there is no similar knowledge dissemination for traumatic emergencies.
