The Comission of Dental Accreditation standards state that program faculty must participate in an ongoing program of faculty development. The ability to engage in the University's Faculty Development programs is a tremendous benefit to our program faculty, making all of us mor accomplished educators, and should easily fulfill that accreditation requirement. The PDC has adopted a multi-focal approach to providing faculty development training to our widely dispersed faculty population.
Our Navy faculty at Bethesda are encouraged to take advantage of USU on-campus faculty development activities. As the University's distance and distributed learning resources continue to be developed, these activities should be available to programs at distant locations within the PDC as well. In addition, the Naval Postgraduate Dental School continues to make their New Faculty Orientation training available to distant sites via Video Tele Training, as they have done for more than 10 years. All programs are encouraged to maximize atendance at faculty development presentation given by local consultants, as well as those given at national specialty meetings. In addition, a traveling USU Faculty Development Team periodically visits major military medical centers throughout the country. You will be made aware of their schedule by your Service Postgraduate Dental School Dean. These presentations are outstanding and your attendance is highly encouraged. The annual Federal Services Dental Educators' Workshop continues to emphasize and provide faculty development training for attendees. USU faculty development experts have become regular contributors to this activity. The PDC will soon launch a Faculty Development training course for new dental educators on the Sakai Learning Management System that will be available to all PDC faculty that have obtained Sakai access. We also hope to begin participation in the USU Leadership Course that will target new Program Directors and provide a concentrated faculty development curriculum.
Approved faculty development activities that are conducted by USU faculty or held at PDC locations, can be used for credit toward a USU Certificate in Faculty Development. I refer you to their website for greater detail on that program. In order to register for those approved activities and track progress towoard earning the certificate, you must first register for the USU Faculty Development Self-Service portal. The process for registerig for the Portal is described below:
