Biography

Commander Caleb “John” Podraza entered naval service in 2000. He completed a general pediatrics residency at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He also completed a fellowship in wilderness medicine, has an international diploma in mountain medicine, has a master of business administration in healthcare degree from American Sentinel University and is currently studying national security strategy at the Naval War College.

Beginning in 2010, CDR Podraza’s first staff assignment was as attending physician in neonatology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. During his tenure at Walter Reed he served in a variety of leadership roles including transport director, healthcare ethics committee chair, team physician for the wounded warrior adaptive sports program, director of pediatric resuscitation training, assistant service chief of neonatology, and medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit.

In 2016, CDR Podraza became the director of neonatology at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune. He is also the director of the neonatal resuscitation program, serves on the national faculty for the American Heart Association, and is a subject matter expert and special consultant to several tri-service working groups at the Defense Health Agency where he ensures readiness, training, policy, and curriculum development throughout the military.

CDR Podraza has deployed on three joint humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions including a six month tour aboard the USNS Comfort hospital ship. He has honorably represented the Navy with boots on the ground in eleven different countries and is a designated Surface Warfare Medical Department officer. He has numerous publications and presentations to his credit and is internationally recognized for his work on low cost bubble CPAP for the treatment of neonatal respiratory distress.

Podraza is double board certified in general pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, serves on the American Board of Pediatrics, and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is the recipient of the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), the Navy Achievement Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal in addition to unit, service and campaign awards.
