Biography

Major David Chang, MD is an active duty U.S. Army officer and specializes in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. He is stationed at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), Germany, a 218-bed facility that serves as the evacuation and treatment center for injured U.S. Service Members, dependents, DoD civilian personnel, and coalition forces. He also serves as a regional consultant in infectious diseases to other military physicians in three area’s of operation: EUCOM, CENTCOM and AFRICOM. MAJ Chang also holds an appointment from the Uniformed Services University as Assistant Professor of Medicine.

MAJ Chang earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in biochemistry. He then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center (Tacoma, WA) and fellowship in Infectious Disease at the San Antonio Uniformed Health Education Consortium (San Antonio, TX).

While the majority of his time is spent on patient care, he is also passionate about the rising rates of antibacterial resistance and sits on LRMC Antibiotic Stewardship committee and chairs the Infection Prevention and Control committee. He has published on novel treatments for drug resistant organisms, experiences in tuberculosis transmission among Air Force trainees, and lessons learned from creating an antibiotic stewardship program in a DoD hospital. Most recently, he is helping to expand infectious disease virtual health capabilities at LRMC and is actively providing continuing medical education for primary care physicians stationed in Europe.

He has been recognized for training medical students and is the recipient of the James J. Leonard Award for Excellence in Teaching Internal Medicine. For his research he also received the ID Week travel grant twice for his work on Acinetobacter baumannii and antibiotic stewardship implementation. Upon completion of fellowship, MAJ Chang was awarded the SAUSHEC Housestaff Hall of Fame for his national presentations and publications.

In his free time, MAJ Chang likes to explore Europe and improve his culinary skills. He has also trained with the German Bundeswehr in a versatility competition and is looking forward to hiking and skiing the Alps over the next year.
