About the Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry of the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), under the chairmanship of David M. Benedek, M.D., COL, USA, MC, contributes to the DoD mission by preparing military physicians to manage behavioral health issues critical to service member and family readiness through its education and research programs.  The Department has active research programs in the Basic and Clinical Sciences and Neurosciences focusing on novel treatment approaches to posttraumatic stress as well as identification of risk and protective factors for suicide.  In addition to intramural research projects, the Department maintains active research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Science Foundation, the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force. The Department has ongoing collaborations with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and is the sponsor of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (a joint USUHS and Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine activity), and provides psychiatry residency training through its affiliations with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the National Capital Area Graduate Medical Education Consortium.
