Biography

Gregory T. Chesnut, MD, FACS, is a urologic oncologist and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He serves as the Director of the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) and as the Director of Urologic Oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. As CPDR Director, he leads an experienced multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, researchers, and staff committed to better understanding, diagnosing, and treating prostate cancer and to providing personalized cancer care for all patients diagnosed with, or at risk for, prostate cancer. The CPDR is the Defense Health Agency's only Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence and, as part of the Murtha Cancer Center, treats Active Duty patients and beneficiaries from around the world.

Dr. Chesnut has extensive clinical and research experience in prostate, bladder, kidney, and testis cancer. He serves as the Principal Investigator for numerous research protocols and clinical trials and has published dozens of articles and book chapters in the peer-reviewed literature in the field of urologic oncology. He completed additional subspecialty training in complex urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he was chosen to lead the Prostate Cancer Working Group and the weekly Genitourinary Oncology Grand Rounds.

Dr. Chesnut received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from the United States Naval Academy and his Medical Degree from the Uniformed Services University. He completed his urology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School and served his Society of Urologic Oncology Fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Chesnut’s clinical practice spans the complete spectrum of genitourinary oncology and includes mastery of both open and minimally-invasive (endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic) techniques. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and the American Urological Association; he serves on the board of directors of the Society of Government Services Urologists. He serves as the Navy's Specialty Leader to the Surgeon General for Urology, where he advises senior Navy leadership on urology policy, programs, and personnel.
