Biography

COL James (Jamie) Mancuso is an active duty Army physician who has served the military for more than 30 years. Originally from Boston's North Shore, COL Mancuso first enlisted in the infantry, serving for 2 years in Germany, during which time he deployed to Operation Desert Storm. He then completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts at Boston and medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in the Class of 1998. While completing his residency in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), he also completed his Master of Public Health (MPH) at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and Hygiene. After service in several public health assignments, he returned to USU to complete a Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH), leading a clinical trial of tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics at Fort Jackson. Throughout his career, he has maintained an active clinical and research practice in TB both in military and non-military populations.

COL Mancuso has had a wide breadth of assignments in public health, including as the Chief of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Fort Stewart, Chief of the Division of Epidemiology for Army Public Health Command-Europe, and Director of the Department of Emerging Infectious Diseases at the US Army Medical Research Unit in Kenya. He has also had a wide breadth of experience in education, including directing the Preventive Medicine residency at WRAIR, training junior physician officers in public health and leading the program to achieve maximum accreditation and multiple resident awards. Dr. Mancuso also served as Director of the Division of Tropical Public Health at USU, leading a staff of 12 senior scientists and physicians who were responsible for 3 Graduate programs and 25 courses. From 2017 to 2021, he was appointed as Chief Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Preventive Medicine, serving as the chief advisor on military Preventive Medicine issues for the Surgeon General and mentor for junior physicians in his specialty. Prior to arriving at USU in 2019, he held the position of Chief of the Epidemiology and Analysis Section of the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch, where he led a diverse staff of military, government civilian, and contractor personnel to perform advanced epidemiologic health surveillance for the DoD, including production of the DoD’s only peer-reviewed, Medline-indexed publication, the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report.

COL Mancuso has a broad experience in operational assignments, having deployed to Iraq twice (1990-1 and 2003), Pakistan for the 2005 earthquake relief efforts, Japan in 2011 for the response to the Fukushima nuclear event, and most recently in 2015 to Liberia to support Ebola response efforts. He remains clinically active at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and at the DC Health & Wellness clinic. He serves as an accreditation site reviewer for the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). He was awarded the CAPT Hooper Memorial Preventive Medicine Award, the Army Medical Department “A” proficiency designator, the Order of Military Medical Merit, and was inducted into the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society. He has more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, is board certified in both Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine, and holds a Certificate of Knowledge in Tropical Medicine and Travel Health by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
