Biography

Born 1933 in south Bend, Indiana the family moved to nearby Mishawaka, Indiana in 1936. I attended public schools graduating form Mishawaka High School in June 1951. I took an accelerated curriculum (due to the Korean War) at Notre Dame graduating with a Bachelors degree and a commission in the US Army as a 2cd Lt in 1954. I was deferred for medical school at the University of Chicago where I was mentored in Pathology by Dr. Robert Wissler obtaining a simultaneous MS and MD. degrees. I enlisted in the Berry Plan and deferred for Post Graduate Education. I went on to internship at Philadelphia General Hospital and then Residency/Fellowship in Neurology at Yale University School of Medicine. I then began my 34 Years of Active service in the Army Medical Corps at Womack Army Hospital on Fort Bragg North Carolina in October 1962 I was transferred in 1964 to the Faculty of the Medical Field Service School on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas. In October 1965 I passed my Board Exams in Neurology and June 1967 was transferred to Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, California as Assistant Chief of the Neurology Service and Assistant Program Director in Neurology. In 1970 I accepted the position of Chief of the Neurology Service at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio where I stayed for 10 years achieving the rank of Colonel before accepting the post of Chief of Service and Neurology Program Director at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. From 1980 to 1991 I was also the Consultant to the Army Surgeon General. In 1980 I was appointed Professor of Neurology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Vice Chair of their Neurology Department. I served as Acting Chairman of Neurology, March 1983-1988, Chairman, Department of Neurology 1988-96.and Interim Chairman 1996-98 after my retirement from the Army in 1996. I was hired by the University as Education Director and Clerkship Director until my retirement from the University in 2015. From 2004-2006 I also served part time as the Granting Officer and Associate Director, United Cerebral Palsy Foundation Under a University agreement. Upon retirement for the Medical School I was awarded an Emeritus Professorship. I have served as a volunteer since including continuing as the Clerkship Director for a year after retirement.
