Biography

Dr. Edward T. Clayson is the Deputy Joint Project Manager for the Medical Countermeasure Systems Joint Project Management Office, headquartered at Fort Detrick, Maryland. In this role, he assists the Joint Project Manager in the daily management of the Department of Defense’s organization responsible for the centralized research, development, acquisition management, and joint service integration for all medical chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) defense systems. He collaborates with joint service, interagency, international teams of scientists, and acquisition professionals in the development, acquisition, and the fielding of Food and Drug Administration-approved CBRN medical countermeasures.
Dr. Clayson graduated with honors from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, and received a doctor of philosophy degree in microbiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Clayson is also a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, the Army Management Staff College’s Continuing Education for Senior Leaders Course, and the Defense Acquisition University’s Advanced Program Management and Executive Program Management courses. He is a member of the Army Acquisition Corps and is certified in Program Management (Level III); Engineering (Level III); Information Technology (Level III); and Test and Evaluation (Level II) career fields.
Dr. Clayson served as an Army officer in numerous medical research and acquisition assignments in the U.S. and abroad. His acquisition assignments included serving as the product manager in four product management offices (PMOs) as well as serving as the deputy project manager in four PMOs. As a product manager, Dr. Clayson led the development of 14 fielded medical products including the following CBRN products: Pyridostigmine Bromide, Anthrax Vaccine, Smallpox Vaccine System, Antidote Treatment Nerve Agent Autoinjector, Skin Exposure Reduction Paste Against Chemical Warfare Agents, and Joint Biologic Agent Identification and Diagnostic System. He holds an appointment as an assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He has authored 41 articles published in scientific journals or textbooks and has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings.
The U.S. Government, industry, and academia have recognized Dr. Clayson and his acquisition programs with 17 professional, scientific, or leadership awards. In addition, as an Army civilian, Dr. Clayson has received the Superior Civilian Service Award (3) and the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service (2). Dr. Clayson’s military awards include the Legion of Merit (2), the Meritorious Service Medal (4), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (3), the Army Achievement Medal (2), the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Superior Unit Award (2), twelve additional campaign/service medals, the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge, and four combat identification badges. Dr. Clayson also received the Army Medical Department Regiment’s Order of Military Medical Merit and the Army Chemical Corps Regiment Association’s Ancient Order of the Dragon awards.
