BiographyLieutenant Commander Sean Cowley is a native of Wrentham, Massachusetts, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 1993 as a Hospital Corpsman. After serving 7 years active duty and 4 years in the Navy Reserves he earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Massachusetts and received a commission in 2004 through the Health Professionals Scholarship Program.
Cowley attended the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, New York, and earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2008. From there he went on to complete his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Following his training, Cowley served at sea on the USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3) as the Junior Medical Officer; on the USS NEW YORK (LPD 21) as the Senior Medical Officer joining her maiden deployment and earning her first Battle “E” Award, second Green “H” and first Blue “H” Health and Wellness Unit Awards. He then served as the Senior Medical Officer on the Staff of Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic, Medical Readiness Division responsible for direct supervision and training of the fleet’s GMOs and IDCs. His last sea assignment was on FLEET SURGICAL TEAM TWO which was attached to the USS WASP (LHD 1) in support of the F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter first operational tests.
He currently serves as the Department Head of the Internal Medicine Clinic at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Cowley is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians; active in both Navy and Virginia Chapter meetings. He is also a member of the Virginia Osteopathic Medical Association and an international affiliate member of the Royal College of Physicians. Cowley holds the academic rank of Assistant Professor Medicine for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and serves as an active clinical educator for outpatient IM clerkships.
His personal decorations include Navy and Marine Corps Commendations Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Navy Good Conduct Medals, as well as other individual and unit awards.
