WHAT WE DO

The 4D Bio³ Initiative is a multidisciplinary biomedical research program that explores and adapts promising biotechnologies for Warfighter benefit. The program is currently housed in a 10,467 ft² multi-tool facility and supports a broad array of research and education applications. Our facility includes a biofabrication suite, tissue culture room, bioreactor and sensor facility, distance education and training facility, and medical/surgical simulation room. Our capabilities allow for military medical applications and translations to the fields of precision medicine, biomarker discovery, drug and vaccine development, medical technology validation, bio-sensors, environmental and occupational health, and regenerative medicine. 4D Bio³ aspires to be a DoD/Federal resource and welcomes opportunities for collaboration within the DoD and with other Federal agencies, but also with other non-Federal academic institutions, and industry partners.

MISSION

4D Bio3 Center promotes the development and application of advanced biotechnologies and services within the DoD to enhance the readiness, health, and well-being of America's Warfighters, veterans, and families today. 
 

VISION

4D Bio3 is a USU center for biotechnology research, innovation, and medical translation for the Uniformed Services. 
 

ABOUT

With the explosion of emerging biotechnologies over the past two decades, it is imperative that the next generation of military physicians, nurses, scientists, technicians and medics gain meaningful exposure to and training with cutting edge capabilities. Originally established as a five-year program and funded by the Defense Health Program (DHP), the 4D Bio3 Center was created with this in mind. The Center's purpose is to promote the development and application of advanced biotechnologies, biomanufacturing, and bioprinting for research pursuant to Department of Defense (DoD) priorities. 

By leveraging the unique properties of biology to deliver new capabilities, Biotechnologies can be integrated to save and sustain lives in ways previously only imagined. Coupled with Biomanufacturing, scaled production of biologics, medical devices, and counter-measures will push survivability on the battlefield to all-time highs. Integrating Bioprinting offers additive manufacturing techniques to combine cells, biologics and biomaterials to fabricate biomedical devices and tissues. Ultimately, 4D Bio3 will translate to new levels of clinical medical defense care and training solutions.

We aim to decrease redundancy of effort in the development of novel biotechnology solutions for our warfighters. Through the establishment of a DoD bio-fabrication center and laboratory at USU, we hope to unify efforts to expedite DoD adoption of emerging biotechnology innovations.
