THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION

The Office of Research Administration (REA) provides comprehensive pre- and post-award research administration services to faculty, staff, and students at USU. USU functions as the grantor and grantee of research awards. Our services provide USU researchers with grant writing workshops, administrative and scientific peer review, and ensure the highest standards of research quality and integrity. All research at USU go through regulatory compliance review through the Office of Sponsored Programs.

The REA provides oversight of awards worth over $500 million to USU investigators. USU researchers interested in applying for funds from external organizations are supported by the REA through pre- and post- award support. During pre-award, grant applications, cooperative agreements, and project proposals are administratively reviewed by REA staff, followed by two tiers of scientific peer review. Post-award requirements include research and financial progress reports generated by principal investigators.

We are committed to investing in faculty and student research development through funding opportunity announcements. The REA is responsible for establishing and executing a variety of research and training award mechanisms to support students, residents, early career scientists, and senior investigators. REA routinely provides funding for graduate students and capstone students at USU as well.

OFFICE OF SPONSORED PROGRAMS:

The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is responsible for the administration of intramural and extramural applications and awards. OSP has two programs: Intramural Research Program (IRP) and Extramural Research Program (ERP). Within OSP, Grants Specialists are available to assist faculty and students with pre- and post-award requirements.

  • The Intramural Research Program (IRP) is designed to promote research and assist USU investigators in becoming competitive for extramural research awards. IRP strongly encourages collaborations with military and civilian research partners.
  • The Extramural Research Program (ERP) provides oversight and guidance for submitting research proposals to be funded by sponsoring agencies outside of USU. ERP ensures quality review of research proposals for completeness and accuracy based on the sponsors guidelines and USU policies, and provides seamless support throughout the duration of the project.

Rigorous scientific peer review is a responsibility of the REA Scientific Review Officer (SRO).  The SRO oversees the scientific review processes to ensure that each application is evaluated for scientifically sound objectives and is relevant to the research program: It enhances the overall quality of research.

Pre- and post-award management is critical. The research information systems team develops and maintains innovative databases for REA, coordinates database systems for research activities across the University, and provides data support for VPR administrative processes.
